Deliverables should support ongoing maintenance
A design’s usefulness extends to the next update.
Research Notes
The usability of design work extends into the next revision. This article explores the relationship between content, design, and use, offering a judgment framework applicable to project discussions.
Organize files by purpose.
Source files, published files, and production files serve different tasks. Clear naming and structure help receiving teams find what they need quickly.
Explain key usage conditions.
Typefaces, images, cropping, sizing, and material specifications require documentation. For editable templates, specify content length and substitution methods to prevent misuse.
Assign responsibility for updates.
Record version dates, revision scope, and contact information. New content enters the system through clear process; design principles persist in use.
Bringing it into project discussions
- Accuracy: Do facts, names, data, and charts have clear sources?
- Clarity: Can different readers find information relevant to them?
- Sustainability: Can design and content rules carry forward in the next update?
Bring these questions to real materials and use cases, recording the current version, the rationale for changes and feedback from use. When every adjustment has a clear basis, the team can keep applying these judgments in future work.
