PERSPECTIVES / Brand Building & Renewal
Visual guidelines need room for application
Consistent principles can accommodate different contexts.
Research Notes
Unified rules and situational change can coexist. This article explores the relationship between content, design, and use, offering a judgment framework applicable to project discussions.
Clarify what stays stable.
Logo, primary colors, typeface relationships, and key graphics should have clear standards. With stable core, different teams more easily understand what must stay consistent.
Design what can vary.
Imagery, layout density, information hierarchy, and sizing adjust by context. Standards should state adjustment principles with real examples so variation maintains shared recognition.
Provide usage tools.
Common templates, asset files, and application examples translate standards into daily work. Regular documentation of usage issues lets rules evolve with practice.
Bringing it into project discussions
- Direction: Can one sentence explain why customers choose you?
- System: Are relationships between group, business units, and products clear?
- Application: Can sales, digital channels, and on-site teams use the same expression?
Bring these questions to real materials and use cases, recording the current version, the rationale for changes and feedback from use. When every adjustment has a clear basis, the team can keep applying these judgments in future work.
