PROJECT GUIDE / Product and Market Expression
How should information be organized on packaging?
Give the brand, category, key benefits and specifications each a clear place.
Define the Task First
Give the brand, category, selling points and specifications a clear place. At the outset, review existing materials alongside typical use cases to identify where problems arise, who they affect and which existing content needs to remain in use.
The scope of structuring packaging information should reflect the business, its audiences and delivery requirements. The following offers a framework for discussion and planning.
Three Stages of Work
Reading Order
Arrange information around purchase and use, distinguishing three tasks: recognizing the product, comparing options and understanding how to use it.
Range Relationships
Establish clear distinctions between flavors, models and sizes while retaining the visual cues that unite the brand.
Physical Review
Review text, graphics and structure at actual size, ensuring information flows coherently across the front, sides and back.
What to Prepare Before We Talk
- Product features, specifications, use cases, and information priority
- Sales channels, display formats, and how customers compare options
- Existing packaging, product materials, and customer feedback
Representative samples are a good place to start. Past versions, real-world photos and typical feedback illustrate the problem better than style references alone; any missing information can be gathered during project discussions.
How We Discuss and Review
- Recognition: Can brand and product be identified in actual display environments?
- Understanding: Does key information answer the user's selection questions?
- Extension: Are naming, product lines, and different channels governed by consistent rules?
When everything is emphasized, readers struggle to find the information that matters most.
Each review round records confirmed directions, required changes and who owns them. Before moving to the next phase, we clarify which materials the changes affect, so strategy, design and implementation stay connected.
Deliverables to Discuss
A packaging information map, rules for differentiating the range, and layout and structural mock-ups.
Specific quantities, content depth, production scope and timing are determined by project materials and usage conditions. At delivery, we also record file versions, usage instructions and ongoing maintenance responsibilities.

When you get in touch about a project, it helps to share your business context, existing materials, primary use scenarios and the problems you want to solve. We'll use this to discuss scope and how we might work together.
