Website planning & design

Understanding website design cost and scope

Compare template types, content work, interaction complexity and implementation responsibilities before comparing total prices.

One quote may cover interface design, while another includes content, translation, development and maintenance. Similar totals or page counts do not establish equivalent work. Define the deliverables before assessing price.

Count page types and content work

Twenty product pages using a shared template differ from twenty individually designed campaign pages. Specify independent templates, reusable elements, special interactions and language variations. Identify who will supply publishable copy, images and structured product data.

Make the quotation checkable

  • Discovery: interviews, audit, architecture and planning.
  • Design: templates, mobile layouts, components and states.
  • Content: editing, translation, photography and entry.
  • Implementation: CMS, interfaces, migration, testing and launch.
  • Handover: training, access, assets and maintenance.

List exclusions and a process for estimating additions. A new system integration, language or approved architecture change may affect several phases. A factual correction may be a different class of work; agree on the distinction.

Prioritize complete business paths

Protect the core service, product, evidence and contact journey before adding elaborate motion or secondary tools. If delivery is phased, define what will be complete and usable at each stage. Compare partners against the same brief rather than assuming a universal industry price.

Record changes

Log the request, reason, affected pages, estimate and decision. Explain schedule and scope effects before accepting a change to an approved direction. This makes useful adjustment possible without losing visibility into the budget.

Is per-page pricing always inappropriate?
No. It can work when page types and complexity are clear, with explicit rules for reuse, content and implementation.
What should a limited budget defer?
Defer low-priority features while keeping essential visitor tasks complete and usable.
