RESEARCH & PERSPECTIVES / AI & BRAND
How can brand, product and service names be used consistently?
Create a name register, usage guidelines and an update process to reduce confusion across your website and other channels.

Why naming consistency matters
Customers may encounter the same company through its website, search results, presentations and sales conversations. If brand names, legal entity names, product names and service names are used interchangeably, customers may misunderstand which business is responsible or struggle to find the relevant information. Consistent naming does not mean replacing every name with a single term. It means clarifying the role of each name and how the names relate to one another.
Prompted by CES discussions of trust and transparency in intelligent content, this article offers independent advice on corporate content management. Name usage, trademarks and related rights should be verified by the company's qualified professionals.
Create a register of names and entities
List the company's legal name, brand names, commonly used short names, Chinese and English names, product ranges, specific models and service names. For each name, record the associated entity, applicable regions, date of introduction, person responsible and whether it is approved for public use.
Record the relationships between former and current names separately. If a business activity is carried out by an affiliated company or partner, accurately identify the responsible entity. Similar names do not justify presenting different companies' qualifications and client case studies as belonging to one company.
Mark the status of names that are still under internal discussion, have not been approved or are no longer in use. Publishing teams should use confirmed versions rather than make assumptions based on filenames, old presentations or search results.
Define usage rules for different contexts
Explain the relationship between the brand and the business entity when first introducing them. When using shortened names later, make sure readers can understand what they refer to. Product pages should distinguish between product ranges and specific models, with specifications and conditions of use matched to the correct version.
Check the official spelling, capitalization and any required registration symbols for Chinese and English names. For service names that need translation, first confirm their meaning and the actual scope of work, then decide how to use them. Avoid using different translations for the same service across pages.
Create brief usage examples for page titles, navigation, body text and downloadable files. The rules should help editors communicate clearly without forcing lengthy names into every context or creating unnatural keyword repetition.
Manage name changes and historical content
Before a name change, review the affected website pages, contact details, downloadable materials, case studies and third-party materials. Confirm the effective date and any historical explanations that need to be retained. Do not describe a new name as already adopted before the change takes effect.
After updating pages, check links, file titles and internal site search, and explain the relationship between the old and new names where appropriate. If page URLs will change, assess existing links first and make the necessary migration arrangements. Changes to trademarks, contracts and platform information should be confirmed by the people responsible.
For historical projects, names may be presented according to when the work actually took place and how their use was authorized, with any necessary context provided. Do not remove historical information that could affect readers' understanding of the facts simply to make naming appear uniform.
Keep the rules effective over time
Assign an owner for the name register and agree on a review process for new products, new services and organizational changes. Conduct periodic spot checks of the website and authorized channels, record inconsistencies and correct them in order of priority.
Ask readers unfamiliar with the company to answer questions based on the pages: Who owns the brand? What is a particular product? Which service suits their needs? Use misunderstandings to identify improvements while checking the underlying business information. If an old name appears on another channel, first confirm whether the company manages that channel and whether the content has historical value before deciding how to update it. For platforms outside the company's control, submit accurate information through their published correction procedures and keep a record of follow-up actions.
