RESEARCH & PERSPECTIVES / AI & BRAND
How can AI help brand teams explore more creative directions?
Use generative tools to develop and compare ideas, then evaluate them against customer needs, brand evidence and production requirements.

Define the practical problem first
Before exploring ideas, turn the communication task into a specific question: who needs to understand what information, and in which setting? Avoid a broad request to “be more creative.” For example, if the task were to revise a website hero section, the team could first identify the product characteristics visitors need to understand, then discuss the narrative and imagery to present them. Directions generated by AI should serve as material for discussion; they cannot replace the team’s judgment about brand expression.
Set selection criteria for the round: each candidate concept must explain which audience problem it addresses, which product fact supports it, and which touchpoint it suits. If the team has not agreed on the communication priority, complete the task definition first. If a direction can only be described as “visually fresh” and cannot be connected to a customer problem, it should not advance. These recommendations are independent practical analysis based on a publicly discussed topic and should be adapted to the company’s information and media requirements.
Clarify objectives and available materials
Organize the brief into inputs that can be checked: product facts, audience, communication objectives, required brand assets, prohibited expressions, media dimensions, and evaluation criteria. Assign identifiers to the materials. For example, when exploring product packaging, the team could list confirmed product information, existing logo files, and packaging dimensions separately. Mark unconfirmed selling points as information to be supplied, rather than letting generated content answer business questions.
Keep a version whenever the brief changes, noting which condition was revised so the creative team can trace changes in direction. Inputs are ready to use when key facts have sources, reference materials have defined usage limits, and missing information has clear questions and an owner responsible for verification. Handle client confidential information, personal information, and unpublished files only through company-approved tools and procedures. Materials with unclear permissions should not be passed into production as usable assets.
Organize exploration and production around the task
Use the same brief to develop clearly differentiated concept groups, prioritizing changes in narrative angle, emotion, or composition instead of treating a color change as a new direction. For example, to compare ways of introducing a product, the team could explore one concept organized around usage scenarios and another around product characteristics. Designers should explain how each group addresses the task, expresses the brand, and which elements still need verification.
Change only a few variables in each round, retaining prompts, reference files, and output versions. If the round compares narrative angles, keep the audience and media conditions as consistent as possible so the differences can be explained. A candidate should advance only if it has a distinct rationale for its expression and can be compared in the intended medium. Remove concepts that rely solely on fashionable visual effects without an explainable connection to the brand. Generation volume and speed may be recorded, but they are not evidence of creative effectiveness.
Check facts, recognition, and conditions of use
Place candidate directions into actual application layouts and check recognition, readability, and production constraints separately. For example, if a concept were intended for an exhibition screen, arrange the information at the planned dimensions and ask people outside the project to restate the main message. Record what they interpreted as the primary information and where misunderstandings arose. Use this feedback to identify comprehension problems; a small number of restatements or an internal vote cannot serve as evidence of market preference.
Then check the text, logos, model names, numbers, product characteristics, and image sources individually, and verify that the information hierarchy follows brand rules. Acceptance should address specific questions: can the main point be restated correctly, does the product presentation match confirmed information, and does the image suit the intended medium? Pseudo-text, fictitious functions, and details requiring manual rework must be addressed before formal delivery. Content whose facts or usage rights remain unconfirmed cannot be accepted as finished work.
Validate with real tasks and maintain the work
Once a direction is selected, the design team should refine original assets, typography, and application rules, prepare the files required for the actual media, and retain selection rationales, permission documentation, and approved versions. For example, once a website hero design had been selected, people outside the creative process could be asked to read it with the original task in mind, while their understanding and unresolved questions are recorded. After revisions, repeat the same task to check whether the misunderstandings initially identified remain.
At handover, specify the applicable channels, audience, responsible owner, and review date, and distinguish drafts from approved files. When product information or usage scenarios change, review the affected pages and materials. If a problem stems from missing information, return to the brief and supply it. Publication of the relevant content should pause when factual support or image permissions cannot be traced.
